Do Youth Ministries Ignore Skill Based Training?

Entrenuity Info - Friday, January 22, 2010
There is a direct connection between access to financial resources, business development, job creation and a communities economic stability. However, when it comes to training youth with marketplace skills needed to overcome these challenges, the church as a whole ignores this opportunity. Surprising? Not really. Churches and ministries typically offer "activities" for youth to be involved; but skill based entrepreneurial/vocational training to provide youth with marketplace skills are almost non-existent. This is especially common within the urban context. Many youth pastors and leaders recognize entrepreneurial and business training is valuable, but they themselves often do not possess the very skills needed to train the youth they serve. If we as a nation, particularly those within the church context, strive to impact the next generation of leaders, then we cannot ignore our own realties of having to "retool/retrain" ourselves.

Brian! This is fantastic. Agreed! We're thinking of this a lot right now. Its a real challenge to diversify skills when you're already drawn to a specific area of work. Good point

Brian, your question is directly affiliated with urban ministry failure to reach two targeted audiences- very low income youth and upper income minority audiences. I am not sure this is the proper format to discuss my thoughts. I will give you a call later to do so and I promise to write something that can drive discussion regarding this topic.
